Severus Snape
Lily Potter
James Potter
the story ;;
It wasn't always James and Lily. At one point, Severus had been Lily's best friend. He had always loved her in an obsessive, possessive way. Yet when he had one day hatefully spewed out "mudblood" it spelled out the end of his and Lily's friendship.
Or so it seemed.
However, Lily and James' fairy tale ending sometimes had a few speed bumps or two.
One night when their spat had been particularly bad, she ended up getting drunk. Intoxicated and upset, she began to think about her past. She remembered how she and Severus had been friends all those years ago, and she really did miss him.
Even if she was very disappointed in his choice to join the Death Eaters.
She stumbled to Spinner's End, knocking on Severus' door.
Severus opened the door, and he was the last person he expected to see. She was clingy and tearful, and wanted to talk. He told her that she'd listen. Not much of what she said was coherent, but when she started kissing him, he pushed her away at first. He insisted that she had a husband and a family of her own.
But as the night wore on, and she kept kissing him, finally he caved.
She spent the night at Spinner's End, but when he woke she was gone in the morning. She left nothing but a note apologizing to him, and the scent of autumn leaves spilled across the pillows she had been laying on.
He knew that this wouldn't last forever, but he was saddened his paradise was wilted so soon.
Then Lily came to his house again, in tears, but this time completely sober. She explained that she was pregnant and that the children she were carrying were his, and James wasn't about to raise the children, but she didn't want to give them up for adoption, and she didn't know what to do.
Severus gritted his teeth. He never could see himself as a good father, but he also hated knowing he was the one that got Lily into this mess. So he told her that he'd take the children.
True to his word when the children were born he whisked them away. It was late that night when they were finally born, the last of the children being born exactly one minute before midnight. Three wailing infants were definitely going to cut into his private life, but he accepted it as a punishment he would have to endure. It was partially his fault all this had happened.
Much to his sadness and disappointment, Lily never visited the children. Not once, not ever. She asked him never to speak of her to them. She could see that it broke her heart, but she thought it would be easier for them not to know her. Yet he promised her that he wouldn't.
He has kept his promise to her all these years without any intention of breaking it.
Only once has Lily asked about the children, when they were eighteen.
"So how are Severin, Dempsey, and Linda doing? I don't usually see them. I do see Dempsey a lot, looking irritable and snarling at people in the Apothecary. He sounds a lot like you. Dempsey seems so shy behind his books. Every once in a while I see Linda, she always looks so serious and annoyed - like you."
"She's always been the moodiest one of the bunch. She does brood too long on things, like I do," he muttered. "Severin and Dempsey are fine, and Linda... well, I don't know. I only hear how she is from her brothers. She doesn't talk to me, anymore. She left as soon as she turned seventeen."
"Why?"
"Because I didn't approve of her boyfriend."
Lily tried hard not to laugh. "I see. She'll come around someday, I'm sure."
"No, I don't think she will. She's like me, she can hold a grudge forever."
the final outcome ;;
- James and Lily are finals
- Severus is frustrated that Lily only speaks to him about the "children" and rarely ever, if that.
- He'd like to have some sort of normalcy in their relationship, but Lily always runs from him, as if afraid he'd try to pursue something romantic with her again. He's not stupid, he knows she won't leave James.
- James would really rather hex Severus to oblivion, and sometimes wonders if his life would be better if he had let Moony kill him. Yet he knows he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he had let Snivellus die.
- Lily just wishes that she had exercised restraint and common sense and hadn't gotten drunk that night or ended up at Severus' house. All she knows is that her life is a lot more complicated than it needs to be, at her age. She wishes the drama would stop. As much as she loves her children, she knows it's better for her and Severus if she stays away.
- Lily and James sometimes argue about this, but Lily insists it's the only way.
